APA's Soccer Season Ends in Wilmington

The APA varsity soccer team lost a 2OT NCISAA 2A playoff thriller, 3-1, at Coastal Christian HS Friday evening, despite tieing the game in the final minutes of regulation. The Patriots, the No. 11 seed, surrendered a Centurion goal early in the second half, but scored on a Ward Sylvester goal with just four minutes remaining in the match, assisted off a corner kick by fellow senior captain Holt Kendall. The hosts, the No. 6 seed in the 12-team tournament, outshot Parrott, 14-5, and APA's goalkeeper Michael Mikhail made six saves. "We are proud of our effort but disappointed in the outcome," said APA coach Steve Logan, whose team finished the season at 12-5-3. "Our goal coming in was to challenge for the state title and we didn't advance, so that is a letdown. "Still, our team played hard all game and fought back to send the game into overtime. But we gave Coastal too many good looks and they are too good a team to not finish on their chances." The match marked the final game for APA's senior class of Kendall, Mclean Piner, Sylvester, and Austin Willman. All-Conference players for Parrott included junior Zacchaeus Rasberry, APA's leading scorer with 26 goals; Sylvester, the Patriots' field general at central midfield; junior Jason Farsaie, who recorded 7 goals and 8 assists; and, junior Alex Henderson, who was a defensive mainstay for APA. Parrott ended up third in the Coastal River Conference, recording a mark of 5-3-2, to finish behind Fayetteville Academy, the No. 1 ranked team in the state (20-0-0), and Coastal CHS, whom the Patriots tied last Thursday, 6-6.
